I haven’t always been an instructional designer. Technically, I’m fairly new to the field. However, I've been a middle school math teacher for the last seven years and a lot of what I did as a teacher is very similar to that of an instructional designer.
While I enjoyed working with my students, my favorite part of teaching was designing the curriculum. I loved dissecting the objectives and researching the content by talking with other teachers, sifting through textbooks and scouring the web to figure out what exactly my students needed to learn, how in depth I should go and the best way to teach it to them. I enjoyed designing lessons and creating the materials used to teach those lessons. About two years ago, while researching blended learning, I somehow came across a blog post on Connie Malamed’s website, The eLearning Coach. It was titled, “What Instructional Designers Do: Is this a career for you?” After reading her post, I immediately signed up for her “Breaking into Instructional Design eCourse” and began doing more research on this career I had never heard of before. I immediately knew I wanted to be an instructional designer and I began navigating my career in that direction by joining the ATD and attending seminars, taking instructional design courses and reading blogs and books. That brings me to the purpose of this website. I have been learning so much in the last few months that I needed a way to document the things I am learning about. So I started this website to showcase the projects I am working on and to share the new ideas I am learning about. I would love any feedback you’d like to provide on my projects or suggestions of things I should learn more about. |
